Treasure Hunt Video: Family chasing $1M prize finds $30K gold cache

A Nova Scotia family searching for the Great Canadian Treasure Hunt’s $1-million grand prize found a hidden bonus cache worth more than $30,000 in gold at Cape D’Or.

Peter and Nancy Staples found the prize with their son Gerald near the Cape D’Or lighthouse after months of working through clues from opposite sides of the country. Gerald had returned to Halifax from British Columbia for one week, giving the family a short window to test its best theory.

“I got in there with my walking stick and said, ‘Holy moly, look at this,’ and we pulled it out and did our Riverdance routine,” Peter Staples told The Miner’s video anchor, Devan Murugan. “It just worked out that the weather was good, my health was good and we rolled to the right spot at the right time.”

The Staples family has not stopped looking. The larger prize remains unfound. The search still means “trudging around the woods getting eaten by bugs” rather than relying on an “armchair internet” hunt, Peter said.
