Students learn about geology

A week-long interactive study program, designed to introduce grade 7 and 8 students to the many facets of geology, will run from April 18 to 26 at the Ecole Royal Orchard Public School.

The study program, entitled the World of Geology/Geomonde, is the result of a collaboration between the school and Toronto-based geological consulting firm Watts, Griffis and McQuat.

The students will participate in a series of activity stations and hands-on workshops dealing with rock and mineral identification, earthquakes, mining, mapping and the environment. The students will also visit the Scarborough Bluffs and learn about the geology of Toronto. In addition, they will discuss the real-world relevance of what they have learned with professors from the University of Toronto.

The study unit will be concluded with an exhibition held at the school in which the students will design booths that highlight the geological concepts they have learned.
