Summitville pleads guilty to charges

Facing 40 charges arising from environmental damage at its Colorado gold mine, Summitville Consolidated Mining has entered a guilty plea and been assessed US$20 million in fines in United States federal court.

The statement of facts, agreed to by both prosecution and defence, said in part that Summitville committed “ongoing violations at the same time that [environmental] agencies either were being assured to the contrary or were being provided false or misleading information.”

Summitville, which owes the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency US$100 million for the site cleanup, filed for bankruptcy in 1992 and its liabilities will wipe out the assets long before the fine is paid.
