Platinova, Greenland consider building refinery at Nuuk

The feasibility of processing zinc concentrates near Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, is being investigated by Platinova Resources (TSE) and the government of Greenland. The partners are looking at building a 100,000-ton-per-year refinery on the southwest coast of Greenland at a cost of about US$300 million.

The plant would target zinc concentrate from the Canadian Arctic that currently passes by the deep-water, ice-free port on its way to European refineries. Feed could include concentrate from the Izok Lake project, currently in the exploration stage but expected to move into the development stage soon. Izok Lake could be shipping concentrate as early as 1997. Low-cost hydroelectric power facilities capable of supporting a new refinery are nearing completion in Nuuk.

A preliminary evaluation of the project will be completed by year-end. Production, if warranted, could start by 1996.
