Placer to spend US$35 million at Campbell gold mine

A US$35-million project to deepen the shaft at the Campbell gold mine in Balmertown, Ont., should sustain annual production of 300,000 oz. beyond the year 2000.

Beginning in January, owner Placer Dome (TSE) will deepen the shaft to 1,871 metres below surface from the current 1,316-metre level. In addition, a new crusher, new production hoists and larger skips will be installed. Reserves total 562,500 tonnes grading 26.7 grams gold per tonne (of which, 444,500 tonnes grading 28.1 grams were delineated this year). The development at depth will provide access to areas where additional reserves will be delineated.
