Louis Philip (Phil) Eckman, a Winnipeg-born mining engineer, has died. He was 77.
Mr. Eckman graduated from geology at the University of Manitoba in 1938 and from mining engineering at Queen’s University in 1942.
A Life Member of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy & Petroleum, Mr. Eckman spent most of his 45-year career at three mining companies: Ventures, Patino Mining and Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting.
At Ventures, he had the unusual experience of managing an underground copper mine, and at Patino, he contributed to the acquisition of important nickel deposits in New Caledonia. He also contributed to the purchase, by HudBay, of Inspiration Consolidated Copper in Arizona.
Mr. Eckman is survived by Marjorie, his wife of 41 years, and two children.
