Fred Gill, manager of Latin America for Cominco Resources International, died recently. Gill was a passenger in a chartered boat that sank in a sudden windstorm in Chile’s Punta Arenas region. He was 55. Born in Lancaster, England, Gill received a B.Sc. degree (Hons.) from the University of Durham in 0000,0600 1957, and an M.Sc. from the University of Toronto in 1966. He joined Cominco in 1957 and had worked as an exploration and mine geologist. At the Con gold mine in Yel lowknife, N.W.T., he was chief geologist, 1966-68.
After two years as a private consultant for Precambrian Mining Services, Gill rejoined Cominco in 1970 as an exploration geologist. He was promoted to senior geologist in 1975; assistant manager in 1981; and manager of exploration, Latin America and the Pacific Rim, in 1985.
Gill became manager of Latin America for Cominco when it was formed in 1987. He had played a major role in the Marte and Lobo gold discoveries in Chile as well as in the Mariquita copper, El Zapote gold and San Martin wollastonite projects in Mexico. Also, he contributed to the development of the high-grade Maria copper project in Mexico.
