NEWS IN BRIEF Brunswick lays off 100 workers

Toronto-based Brunswick Mining & Smelting (TSE), the 67% owned Noranda (TSE) subsidiary, says it is laying off 100 workers from its Belldune smelter in New Brunswick as part of a workforce restructuring.

The majority of workers, from the smelting division, are being offered early retirement.

The company said it will work with government and union officials to help those workers who need retraining and relocation. However further details have not yet been released.

Brunswick says it has to restructure to cut costs and remain competitive.
