Newall to talk Copperbelt

Clive Newall, president of First Quantum Minerals, will discuss Africa’s prolific Copperbelt at a meeting of the Toronto branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, scheduled for 12 noon on May 19 at the Ontario Club.

Newall’s company owns two mines in the Copperbelt: Lonshi in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Bwana Mkubwa in Zambia. First Quantum also has an 80% interest in the Kansanshi copper-gold mine in Zambia. Newall will describe what he and his company had to do to bring these mines into production.

Kansanshi started production in April 2005 and is designed to process 4 million tonnes of oxide ore and 4 million tonnes of sulphide ore per year. After a C$29-million expansion, slated for later this year, production at Kansanshi should reach 145,000 tonnes copper cathode annually, starting in 2006. Cash costs are expected to average US45 cents per lb.

Newall is a graduate of the Royal School of Mines in London. He later earned his masters of business administration from the Scottish Business School at Strathclyde University.

He has held senior management positions with Amax Exploration and the Robertson Group of companies, and was president of Kensington Resources. He served as director of London-based Plateau Mining and Australia’s Anvil Mining.

The lunch will be hosted by engineering firm Met-Chem. The price for members is $30; for non- members, $40. For more information, contact the CIM by e-mail at cim_toronto@sympatico.ca
