More potential diamond targets in Quebec

The Quebec government has identified two new sites with potential for diamond exploration, along the western Saindon-Cambrien Corridor in the province’s northern region.

The sites, which contain high-chromium picroilmenite and high-chromium diopside (known indicators of diamondiferous kimberlite), were identified during a reconnaissance survey of indicator minerals.

The discovery was made as part of the Far North Mining Exploration Program, introduced by the Quebec Department of Natural Resources in 1997. Natural Resources Canada is participating in the exploration effort as part of its Targeted Geoscience Initiative, a 3-year, $15-million program.

“The discovery of this new target is a promising sign of the renewal of the mineral industry in Quebec,” says Franois Gendron, the province’s minister of Natural Resources.

Details of the project were discussed at the recent Geological Research Seminar in Quebec City.
