Miners form council to protect environment

Major companies involved in mining and metallurgy met recently in London, England, to initiate the formation of an international council on metals and the environment. The purpose is to promote environmentally sound practices and policies. Representatives from Canada included Inco Ltd., Teck Corp., Falconbridge Ltd., Noranda Inc. and Cominco Ltd. From the U.S. came Asarco Inc., Kennecott Corp., Doe Run and others. Also present at the meeting were delegates from Europe, Japan, South Africa and Mexico.

Gary Nash, an organizer, says the effort shows “we have recognized that environmental issues transcend both national and commodity boundaries.”
