Improved relationships among First Nations peoples, resource companies and government were the focus of the recent Mining and Energy Forum, held in Lower Post, B.C.
Hosted by the Yukon’s Kaska Dena native council, the conference drew more than 60 delegates representing the British Columbia government, mining companies and the Assembly of First Nations.
Presentations included the history of the Kaska Dena, government regulatory processes for resource exploration, and the status of current mineral projects on or near the Kaska Nation. Workshops addressed recommendations involving mining and traditional land use, employment and training and infrastructure.
In addition, the Kaska Dena council presented to the forum its resource policy, which outlines the band’s desire to work in conjunction with industry and government in order to arrive at development agreements.
