Madeleine Mines receives environmental permit

The Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Energy has issued Madeleine Mines (TSE) final approval for operation of the Lac des Iles platinum-palladium mine, 60 miles north of Thunder Bay, Ont.

Upon completion of a tailings management facility, Madeleine hopes to begin mining 3,000 tons per day. The facility will be operated by Madeleine’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Lac des Iles Mines.

Two years ago, Madeleine and former company president Patrick Sheridan were charged with six counts of violating Ontario’s environmental laws. In April, 1992, the case against the company was resolved and Madeleine was fined $15,000.

The Lac des Iles deposit, owned 50% by Madeleine and 50% by the Sheridan Platinum Group, contains 22.6 million tons grading 0.19 oz. palladium and platinum per ton and 0.02 oz. gold.
