I am writing in response to several references in your newspaper during the past year concerning the kimberlite and diamondiferous pipes on Ile Bizard at Montreal.
Many of the articles infer there is no documentation regarding the original discovery and exploration efforts. Newspaper articles from the Toronto Daily Star and the Wall Street Journal, in January, 1968, identify the original discoverers and exploration groups, the primary company being a De Beers subsidiary called Canadian Rock Co.
Two letters in my possession report on the findings: 10 diamonds weighing 0.0605 carats were recovered from some bulk samples. These finds are noted in the correspondence of Anglo American Corp. The summary report does note that there may have been possible contamination; however, the host rock was identified as kimberlite.
To the best of my knowledge, the diamonds are at the National Museum in Ottawa, identified as the first in situ diamonds discovered in Canada. Howard Wiggett
