Lawyers operating despite strike

Despite the legal strike, Paul Girard, president of Cheni Gold Mines (TSE), said the company “intends and expects” to continue operations. Girard noted that a significant number of employees, representing most operational departments, exercised their lawful right to continue to work notwithstanding the strike.

The employees are members of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 115, and the Tunnel and Rock Workers’ Union, Local 168. Girard said an impasse in collective bargaining arose over the unions’ “unwillingness to recognize certain management rights” which it considers fundamental to efficient operations of the minesite.

The Lawyers mine is a 550-ton- per-day operation which recently reached commercial production levels.
