IGI to open Toronto lab

The International Gemological Institute (IGI), based in New York, N.Y., will open a lab in Toronto to certify diamonds for the Canadian market.

The Toronto lab will include seven Canadians and three IGI staff from other countries. Within a year, the total staff should reach 50. The 1,400-sq.-ft. lab will offer diamond and gemstone appraisal, certification and testing for jewelers and consumers.

IGI’s services include laser inscription, and reports and courses on diamonds and coloured stones.

In 1997, in Yellowknife, N.W.T., the IGI taught a course on rough diamonds to help meet the demand of the diamond trade in far-northern Canada. More than 150 graduated.

The IGI was established in 1975 and has labs in New York City, Antwerp, Bangkok, Bombay and Tokyo.
