An engineer with Mississauga, Ont.-based Hatch has won the 2003 Sherritt Hydrometallurgy Award, presented by the Metallurgical Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.

Kevin Fraser received the award in “recognition of his contributions and leadership in the advancement of high-pressure autoclaves in an innovative, safe and economic manner.”

Fraser joined Hatch in 1996 as director of autoclave technology in the company’s non-ferrous division. Since then, he has formed a group of specialized engineers who provide consulting, design and commissioning services to clients who want to use pressure-leach or pressure-oxidation processing.

Over the past 20 years, Fraser has participated in more than 100 engineering projects around the world, studying, constructing and operating autoclave plants. Among other companies, he has done work for Anglovaal, Barrick Gold, Inco, Lihir Gold, Macraes Mining, Newmont Mining, and Santa Fe Gold.

Fraser received his bachelors degree in metallurgical engineering at Queen’s University in 1978. He is the third Hatch employee to win the award, after Bryn Harris in 1995 and Brian Krysa in 1996.
