Aluminum by Design, an exhibition featuring sculptures, fashion, jewelry, architecture and robotics, is on display at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts until Nov. 4. It is one in a series of events commemorating the centenary of the first aluminum casting in Canada.
Sponsored by Montreal-based Alcan, the exhibit shows how aluminum and its unique properties have inspired designers.
In the entrance hall of the museum’s Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion is a 4-metre-high aluminum tree symbolizing recycling and environmental protection. In front of the museum, visitors can examine the aluminum body of an Audi A2, the first mass-produced car containing a high percentage of aluminum — the result of a joint venture between Alcan and Audi.
Visitors can enter a contest that offers trips to London and New York, N.Y.
Alcan, which has annual revenue of about US$13 billion, employs 52,000 people in 38 countries.
