As cold and inhospitable as the north of Russia may be, the area produces a significant amount of minerals, including diamonds from open pit operations lying on both sides of the Arctic Circle.
It was reported that Russia’s diamond output in 1991 totalled 12 million carats valued at US$1.1 billion.
The first diamond find from the host kimberlite rock of the Russian north took place in 1954.
