A study by Behre Dolbear & Company of Denver demonstrates the intensive cost competitiveness occurring in the Western-world copper smelter-refinery industry as the market swings from periods of constraint in smelter capacity (oversupply of concentrates) to excess smelter capacity.
The consulting firm’s 5-volume study presents historic production, technical data and operating costs, as well as forecasts to the year 2000. The report also looks at the impact on cost of development in areas such as new smelter technologies, economies of scale in expansion projects, retrofitting of new technologies in old smelting facilities, and byproduct credits.
