Comaplex finishes Rankin Island drilling

Drilling on Comaplex Mineral’s (TSE) 50% held Meliadine gold property, near Rankin Inlet, N.W.T., has been completed and results are pending.

The 9,920-ft. program concentrated exclusively on the 4,600-ft.-long Grid F area of the property.

Preliminary results from 36 holes on the east-trending, intensely folded and altered oxide iron formation outlined eight steeply plunging, subparallel en echelon lenses of gold mineralization. The holes were spaced 50-360 ft. apart. The largest lens is on the western end of the grid. Eleven holes, spaced 50 ft. apart and drilled on four different levels to a depth of 350 ft., indicate a mineral inventory of 320,000 tons grading 0.27 oz. gold per ton. This zone is 160 ft. long, 50 ft. wide, and open at depth. Some of the better results from this area include 0.39 oz. gold over 73 ft., 0.49 oz. over 23 ft., and 0.23 oz. over 90 ft.

In 1995, the company plans to carry out definition drilling on Grid F and several other zones. One of these — the Discovery zone, 8.8 miles east of Grid F — has a drill-indicated mineral inventory of 740,000 tons grading 0.28 oz.

Elsewhere in the Territories, detailed magnetic and electromagnetic ground surveys were carried out this summer on Comaplex’s 40%-owned Meadowbank property near Baker Lake. The surveys outlined two target areas south of the Main zone.

The first area is associated with the Goose Island zone, where previous drilling returned gold values of up to 0.38 oz. over 57.8 ft. The second target is 4,000 ft. south and on trend with Goose Island. These two targets will be drill-tested in 1995.

At the company’s Maguse River property, in the Arviat area, a summer reconnaissance program outlined several new occurrences. Visible gold has been noted in intensely deformed, chloritized magnetic iron formation, and grab and chip samples have returned values of up to 2 oz. gold. Ground geophysics and diamond drilling are planned for 1995.
