Cameco plant sets safety record

The Port Hope, Ont., conversion operation belonging to uranium producer Cameco reached a safety milestone on Sept. 2 by recording one year without a lost-time accident.

A lost-time injury is one in which the time lost from an injury extends beyond the day of the injury, preventing the employee from returning to work. The facility, which came under the ownership of the uranium producer in 1988, has operated for 60 years.

The record was achieved during a time of production increases. Production in 1993 increased 43% and this year is expected to jump 20%.

The Port Hope plants convert uranium to fuel products for use in nuclear reactors.
