Having concluded agreements to acquire interests in three properties in Quebec and Norway, Birchwood Ventures (VSE) intends to begin its international search for base metal deposits.
In Norway, Birchwood arranged options to acquire a 207-sq.-km land package near Karasjok in the northern Finnmark region, not far from the Finnish border. Birchwood is looking for magmatic sulphide deposits in areas with electromagnetic conductors and high concentrations of copper, nickel and cobalt in stream sediments and tills.
South and west of the Karasjok project, a showing at Rombaken, 30 km east of the iron port of Narvik, is scheduled to be drilled shortly. The Rombaken showing is an electromagnetic conductor with surface sphalerite and galena mineralization.
Birchwood reports that surface samples contained 7-10% zinc, 1-2% lead, and 1-2 oz. silver per ton. Birchwood’s option entitles it to earn a 65% interest in the property.
Birchwood is also acquiring a 123-sq.-km claim group about 10 km southwest of Port Cartier, Que. A gossan showing has been found in mafic intrusive rocks which form part of an anorthosite body on the northern shore of the St. Lawrence River. Airborne geophysics, geological mapping and detailed sampling of the showings are planned. Field work is under way.
