First-phase diamond drilling by Avalon Ventures (AVL-V) on its Wolf property in northwestern Ontario has returned anomalous platinum group element (PGE) values.
Seven of eight drill holes at the 10,100-ha property, situated 90 km north of Thunder Bay, returned PGE values of up to 0.875 gram platinum and palladium (at a 1-to-1 ratio) per tonne over 1.5 metres. The deepest hole was drilled to a depth of 300 metres.
Mineralization on the property is hosted in a horizontally layered mafic to ultramafic intrusion with a diameter of 7 km. The company also recovered anomalous nickel values as high as 0.11% nickel over 5.7 metres.
The company believes that the intrusion is prospective for PGE mineralization at depth, and intends to conduct further mapping, prospecting and an airborne geophysical survey in order to define additional drill targets.
Also active in the region is Bitteroot Resources (BIT-V). The company recently staked and optioned claims covering 20 sq. km in the region. The land package covers part of a Proterozoic ultramafic intrusion and a number of geophysical targets considered prospective for platinum-palladium and nickel mineralization.
