The S&P/TSX Venture composite index capped off the month of August with a small 8.42-point loss over the Aug. 25-31 reporting period, closing at 1,183.67. The Venture exchange finished the month much as it began, hovering just below 1,200 points. Indeed, the Venture board spent August in a fairly tight holding pattern at that level, trading between the narrow range of 1,159.82 and 1,200.5 points. During the reporting period, the board saw its greatest decline on the final day and otherwise, during the preceding four days, there was a weak tug-o-war of gains and losses.
Still, the five-day trading period was good to many. In terms of 52-week highs and lows, almost twice as many (52) achieved the latter than the former (27).
A trio of companies soared on news of visible gold on freshly drilled core. CanAsia Industries, which has a 50% option on Teuton Resources and Silver Grail Resources’ Clone property, 18 km southwest of Stewart B. C., drilled a number of holes showing visible gold in intersections of semi-massive to massive sulphide between about 5 and 10 metres below surface. CanAsia jumped 7¢ to 14¢; Teuton, 6.5¢ to 27.5¢; and Silver Grail, 8¢ to 17¢.
Signing of a memorandum of understanding with First Nations helped boost Lions Gate Metals shares 21¢ to $1.15. The agreement concerned the rights of the Wet’samet’en First Nation of northwestern B. C. over 22,000 sq. km of territory where Lions Gate owns the massive Poplar copper-gold-moly project. The pact opens the door for dialogue, Lions Gate says.
San Gold gained 28¢ to $3.06 on drill-hole results. It intercepted as much as 5.9 metres grading 44 grams gold per tonne at its Rice Lake mine in southeastern Manitoba. Drilling extended the high-grade 98 vein above level 26.
Currie Rose Resources came nearer to its 52-week high of 11¢, gaining 4¢ to close at 9¢. Though it had little operational news to report from its exploration projects in Tanzania, Currie announced at the end of the day on Aug. 31 that it intended to raise $625,000 through a non-brokered private placement.
Xtierra jumped 5¢ on thin trading to 11¢. Like Currie, it did not report news of significance during the five-day period. The company is advancing its flagship Bilbao project in Zacatecas state, Mexico.
Xtierra recently announced it was starting a feasibility study on Bilbao, where it has so far outlined an indicated resource of 3.6 million tonnes grading 3.52% zinc, 2.75% lead, 0.29% copper and 88.23 grams silver per tonne.
Mandalay Resources, also quiet on the newswire, was up 18¢ to 38¢. The company is advancing, among other projects, the La Quebrada silver-copper property in Chile.
One notable loss over the five-day period was East Asia Minerals’ 81¢ dive to $1.81. Since July, East Asia had been skyrocketing on drill-hole results from its Miwah gold property in Indonesia that had sent its shares to more than $3.
