Southam buys The Northern Miner

Mr Pearce is sole shareholder of Northern Miner Press Limited, which operates all company publications as well as Norgraphics, a subsidiary company.

The publishing properties to be acquired by Southam include: — The Northern Miner, a highly respected weekly tabloid newspaper covering the mining industry; founded in 1915; — The Northern Miner Magazine, a monthly industry magazine; — Canadian Mines Handbook and American Mines Handbook, annual information sources on the mining industry; — Mining Explained, an information handbook published occasionally; — Canadian Oil & Gas Handbook, published annually; — Broadcaster and Cablecaster magazines, both published monthly.

In addition to the publishing properties, Southam will acquire Norgraphics (Canada) Limited, a major commercial printing operation that specializes in the printing of corporate annual reports and other financial documents.

Also included in the transaction is the Langridge-Marshall division, outfitters to the exploration and recreation markets.

The combined revenues of The Northern Miner publications and Norgraphics operations are expected to be about $24 million in 1989. Approximately 200 people work for the combined operations. No job losses are anticipated as a result of the properties being acquired by Southam. Mr Frank Bowles, the president of Northern Miner Press Limited, is retiring after over 40 years of service and Mr Richard Gardner, senior vice- president, Southam Business Information and Communications Group Inc., has been appointed president and chief executive officer.

Financial terms of the transaction were not released.

The acquisition will consolidate the Southam Business Information and Communications Group’s position in the mining and resources industry in Canada and will enable it to expand its provision of information to customers within that market segment. Southam presently produces trade publications and other information sources for the mining and resource sectors, including The Canadian Mining Journal and a related sourcebook.

The Southam Business Information and Communications Group was formed in 1988.

It is an operating company of Southam Inc., a leading Canadian communications company with interests in daily and community newspapers, commercial and speciality printing, retail book stores through Coles Book Stores Limited, and business and professional information products and services.
