I was pleased to note that you included Jack McOuat’s speech on Due Diligence as presented at the Toronto Branch of CIM on Sept 15 in your Oct 3, issue.
I was disappointed however that you made no mention of the fact that the article was the subject of a talk at the CIM luncheon meeting. R P Ehrlich, P. Eng. Past president, Toronto branch, and District 3 councillor, Cim
With regards to an article written by Nicholas Tintor entitled Why some mines fail to work, (N.M., Oct 3/88), the Chamber of Mineral Resources of Nova Scotia wishes to express its strong objection to this article by Mr. Tintor. We stronmly suggest that if an article of this nature is to be printed by The Northern Miner that its staff writers ensure that they have done the pr oper and complete research required prior to making statements that are totally non-factual.
Over the past five years many companies have carried on serious exploration programs in the province of Nova Scotia employing professional people to implement these programs. The wording and inaccuracies in the story of Oct 3 seriously damage the reputation of many qualified individuals and the mining industry as a whole in Nova Scotia.
For Mr. Tintor’s information, Seabright Resources Inc. in particular, under its former management conducted a series of exploration programs throughout the province directed by in excess of 80 qualified geologists and engineers. The figures referred to on Beaver Dam on the drill-indicated reserves were 0.27 oz per ton on 2.7 million tons, not the numbers reported in the article. For Mr. Tintor’s further information, the calculations of these drill-indicated reserves and the pre-feasibility studies were all carried out by some of Upper Canada’s reputable firms, notably MPH Consulting Limited, Redpath and Kilborn Engineering.
We strongly suggest that if Mr. Tintor feels that he should be commenting on this particular situation that he should review the entire program carried out on these properties from its inception to the takeover by Western Mining Corporation. John Veinot Managing Director Chamber of Mines and Resources of Nova Scotia
