Wyoming location of nickel, diamond rush (July 01, 1996)

Wyoming is experiencing a nickel and diamond rush, according to that state’s geological survey.

The current interest in nickel results from the discovery of the huge deposit at Voisey’s Bay, Labrador, and from a recent discovery by the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) in similar rocks. Shortly after the Canadian discovery, the WSGS identified significant nickel-copper-cobalt mineralization, in the southeastern part of the state. Platinum, palladium, gold and silver mineralization was also found there.

In addition to nickel, several companies are also acquiring potential diamond-bearing properties in Wyoming and northern Colorado. The recent interest in diamonds is the result of Redaurum’s newly opened Kelsey Lake diamond mine in Colorado. According to the WSGS, the Colorado-Wyoming state line district includes about 35 diamondiferous kimberlites.
