Workers on strike at South Porcupine mine

Close to 600 production and maintenance workers at the Dome mine of Placer Dome (TSE) in South Porcupine went on strike May 7. The members of local 7580 of the United Steelworkers of America voted 52.6% in favor of strike action; 511 of the 587 eligible employees cast ballots. The union is battling the company on a number of contract fronts, including higher wages.

Union negotiator Gerry Loranger blamed the narrow strike margin on a letter mine manager Bob Perry sent to union local members. The letter outlined the company’s final offer a day before the union’s bargaining team was to present it to the membership.

The last strike at the Dome mine, in 1981, lasted eight weeks.
