WHAT’S NEW A robot survey instrument

Geodimetrics ab of Sweden has developed a monitoring system for detecting the risk of wall failure in open pit mines. Marketed in Canada by Geodimeter of Canada, the system consists of a survey instrument which, with the help of infra-red light, measures distances and angles to a series of strategically placed reflectors. The reflectors have been securely anchored onto the surface to be monitored. The distance to these reflectors can be up to 4 km.

Once the initial measurements have been made manually, the unit can be made to automatically take measurements.

Survey data are transferred either directly via cable or indirectly via a telemetric link to a computer which calculates and compares new co-ordinates with old ones and presents a list of movement tendencies. An alarm system can be used which warns of any movement in the rock face.
