Uranerz to continue work on kimberlites

Exploration on a kimberlite deposit in the Fort a la Corne region of Saskatchewan will begin in a few weeks. Several holes will be drilled on the most prospective of the seven diamond-bearing kimberlite pipes discovered last fall by joint venture partners Cameco and Uranerz Exploration and Mining. In addition, testing equipment, including grease tables and washing drums, has been ordered from South Africa.

Kimberlite, an ultramafic host rock for diamonds, is named after the town of Kimberley, South Africa, where the rock was first identified and mined.

The Fort a la Corne kimberlite, 65 km east of Prince Albert, is reported to be several times the size of the fruitful South African deposits. However, most of the diamonds discovered so far are less than 1.2 mm. in size although “some are of excellent quality,” says Gerhard Kirchner, senior vice-president of Uranerz.
