U.S. REPORT Homestake, Goldstake prepare application

The two partners in the Whitewood Creek tailings reclamation project in South Dakota are preparing their application for a state mining permit. Homestake Mining (NYSE) and Goldstake Explorations (TSE) received the blessing last year of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the gold project, subject to state regulations. Homestake will be project operator.

The current timetable calls for submitting the mine permit application by March or April. Homestake says approval is possible by September or October, 1991, assuming the application meets state requirements.

Production could then commence in early summer, 1992, Homestake said, at a rate of 1.5 million tons per year. A heap leach operation is planned for the tailings, the residue of Homestake’s long-producing mine in the area. Proven reserves of 14 million tons grading 0.052 oz. gold per ton have been calculated for the project.
