U.S. Markets – OCTOBER 13-19

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 221.13 points or 2.2% to close the Oct. 13-19 reporting period at 10,092.19, while the S&P 500 climbed 24.72 points or 2.3% to 1,097.91. The Nasdaq increased 36.43 points or 1.7% to finish at 2,176.32.

Potash outshone gold during the Oct. 13-19 reporting period, despite the fact that over the past 12 months global potash producers have curtailed nearly 20 million tonnes of production. Slow demand and limited restocking meant that Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan had to revise its earnings guidance last month to $3.25-$3.75 per share for the calendar year, down from a range of $4.00-$5.00 per share in July 2009. Nevertheless, the potash giant claimed the No. 2 spot on the list of value gains with a surge of US$13.61 per share to US$103.71. Agrium also advanced, climbing US$5.75 per share to US$57.42. The company announced on Oct. 19 that it would sell a portion of its Carseland nitrogen facility to Terra Industries in order to facilitate its proposed acquisition of CF Industries Holdings. Agrium believes the sale will address regulatory concerns about the CF acquisition under Canadian competition law.

The gold price dipped slightly from US$1,064.10 per oz. on Oct. 13 to US$1,063.50 per oz. on Oct. 19, taking the major gold indexes with it. The Amex Gold Bugs index slid 5.81 points or 1.28% to 448.69 points, while the Philadelphia Gold and Silver index dropped 1.22 points or 0.7% to 178.05. Randgold Resources was the only gold company to make the top ten list, advancing US$3.88 per share to US$76.39. The exploration company signed an agreement with Volta Resources on Oct. 19 to sell its entire stake in the Kiaka

gold project in Burkina Faso for C$4 million and 20 million shares in Volta. Randgold has exploration programs in West Africa, specifically Burkina Faso, Ghana and Mali.

On the negative side, the markets didn’t seem to like Pan American Silver’s $626 million all-share friendly takeover bid for Aquiline Resources and its large Navidad silver project in Argentina. Navidad is one of the world’s largest undeveloped silver deposits, and would triple Pan American’s measured and indicated silver resources.
