TSX VENTURE EXCHANGE – SEPTEMBER 23-29

The first four days of the Sept. 23-29 trading session on the S&P-TSX Venture Exchange were relatively quiet. But then on another Monday that will long be remembered, the exchange dove 133.61 points to close at 1,382.03 points, down 193.96 points over the session. Trading volumes were modest, averaging around 68.5 million per day.

The shakedown continued to push many companies to new lows. This week, 456 made it there, while only two reached new highs.

It didn’t hurt to be into gold. International Tower Hill Mines gained the most in terms of value over the week to close up 77 at $2.25. Tower Hill ended the week with another set of positive drill results from its Livengood project in Alaska. Among other intersections, it cut 25.9 metres grading 3.35 grams gold per tonne starting at 18.3 metres depth. The drilling is part of its effort to upgrade Livengood’s 181 million inferred tonnes grading 0.54 gram gold to the measured and indicated categories.

And although it didn’t release any news, Union Gold doubled its share price to 20.

And it didn’t hurt to be looking for silver either. Wildcat Silver doubled its share price to 40 without any news from its Hardshell silver-lead-zinc property in Arizona.

And although it doesn’t hold any silver or gold assets, all things considered, Whitemud Resources did quite well. It gained 45 to close at $5 on news that it had signed a contract with major U. S. concrete maker Cemstone Products to supply it with its trademarked metakaolin clay: Whitemud.

Waratah Coal, after a difficult month on news its proposal to build a major coal port in eastern Australia had fallen through with a negative environmental ruling, finally got a reprieve. It gained 18 to close at $1.35 on news that Australian-based Mineralogy had upped its ownership of Waratah to almost 17%.

The two largest share movers this week were Dynamite Resources and Selwyn Resources with, respectively, 21.8 million and 19.8 million shares trading hands. Dynamite gained 2 to close at 12 and Selwyn dropped 1 to close at 10 over the trading session.

For SouthGobi Energy Resources, news that it had started delivering coal from Ovoot Tolgoi in Mongolia to buyers in China didn’t help its share price. In terms of value, South-Gobi lost the most this week, down 95 to close at $10.30.

Hathor Exploration also had trouble making gains with news from northern Saskatchewan. It announced a 15-metre uranium mineralized extension from the Roughrider zone at its Midwest Northeast property, in the Athabasca basin, but lost 77 to close at $2.25. It has a joint-venture agreement on the property giving Terra Ventures a 10% production carried interest.

Other notable losses came from Antares Minerals, down 64 to close at $1.75; Energold Drilling, down 60 to $1.75; and Sherwood Copper, down 60 to close at $3.75. During the previous trading session, Sherwood announced a Nov. 14 date for a shareholders’ vote on its pending merger with Capstone Mining.
