TSX Venture Exchange Sept. 22-28

The S&P/TSX Venture composite index remained unsettled over the week of Sept. 22-28, with one day’s gain lost the next day. By the end of the week, the board was up 4.73 points at 1,269.73. Daily trading volumes remained strong, averaging 119 million.

Despite the board’s unsettled appearance, far more junior companies reached new 52-week share price highs than fell to new lows: 103 reached peaks, while just 17 hit valleys.

One of the juniors to reach a new share price high was Ascot Resources, which gained 52.5¢ to more than double its share price in a day on news from its Premier gold project near Stewart, in northwestern British Columbia. The company drill-tested for extensions to the old open pit at Premier and hit significant gold, including 11 metres of 50 grams gold per tonne, 32.5 metres of 2.6 grams gold, and 24.7 metres of 6.9 grams gold. Ascot finished the week up 27.5¢ at 70¢.

Canaco Resources shares also reached a new high on drill results from a gold property. The first hole of the season at the company’s Magambazi gold prospect in Tanzania returned 53 metres grading 4.32 grams gold from roughly 70 metres depth. Canaco’s share price gained 30.5¢ to end the week at 41¢.

A major step towards production at the Mothae diamond project in Lesotho propelled Lucara Diamond’s share price up 12¢ to 75¢ over the week. The company received a mining lease for the project and finalized a mining agreement giving the government of Lesotho a 25% interest Mothae, half of which will be free-carried. The Mothae kimberlite is a large, low-grade structure that yielded 4.7 carats per hundred tonnes in a recent bulk sample.

Strong gold grades in drill core from the Barry pit lifted Metanor Resources’ share price 7¢ to 66¢. Expansion drilling at Barry returned 33 metres averaging 9.24 grams gold in hole 423 and 23 metres of 3.85 grams gold in hole 421. The Barry pit, which is currently being mined, sits 65 km away from Metanor’s Bachelor Lake mine in southwestern Quebec.

Atac Resources also saw a healthy lift on news from a gold property. The junior is exploring the Rau gold project in the Keno Hill district of the Yukon and recent drilling in the northwestern part of the main Tiger zone returned intercepts including 20.7 metres grading 23 grams gold and 23.5 metres averaging 11 grams gold. Atac’s shares gained 28¢ to close at 80¢.

For Underworld Resources, good gold grades weren’t quite enough. The company released another set of results from its White Gold property in the Yukon, including 50 metres of 3.49 grams gold and 112 metres of 1.94 grams gold, but investors pushed its share price down 21¢ to $1.34. Earlier results from White Gold have included longer, stronger intercepts, such as 100 metres of 3.1 grams gold and 31 metres of 9.2 grams gold.
