The Nov. 27-Dec. 3 trading session was a subdued one for the S&P-TSX Venture Composite Index. The junior board saw slightly more in the way of losses than gains to close down 59.3 points, or 2.2%, at 2,717.4. Average daily trading volume was 89 million, down slightly from the previous week.
The board’s bear trend is amply clear when comparing the number of juniors reaching new high and low share prices: 192 companies fell to new lows, while only seven hit new highs.
Peak Gold was the session’s top trader, moving 34.6 million shares to close down 11 at 48. The company announced third-quarter earnings of US$1.2 million and closed a $110-million private placement. Peak had initially announced the financing at $225 million.
Another top trader, Canplats Resources, traded 11.6 million shares to gain 47 over the session, closing at $1.82. Drill results from the company’s Camino Rojo project in Mexico, released the previous session, spurred a significant increase in trading activity and share price for the junior over the week.
Near the top of the volume list once again was Sage Gold. The company traded 25.4 million shares to close the session up 2.5 at 50, without announcing any news. Similarly, Yukon Zinc moved 16.7 million shares to close up half a penny at 13.5, after posting quarterly financial results.
In the wake of a friendly takeover bid from Sherwood Copper, shares of Western Keltic Mines moved well over the session and saw a boost of 1.5 to close at 43. Sherwood, which gained 19 to close the week at $5.59, is after Western Keltic’s Kutcho copper project, in northern B.C.
Drill results from Nortec Ventures’ Kaukau property in northeastern Finland prompted the highest volume day of trading in the company’s history. Over the session, Nortec traded 9.8 million shares to move up to 20, a gain of 1.5.
Despite a fairly steady stream of reasonable drill results from both of the company’s projects, Bear Creek Mining lost 64 over the trading session to close at $7.10. Clifton Star also lost 64 over the week to close at $1.34.
Kodiak Exploration shot up 49 in one day after posting results from its Hercules gold project, in northern Ontario. By the end of the trading session, Kodiak posted a gain of 52 to close at $3.92 on 5.1 million shares traded.
An exploration company focused on the Mirdita volcanogenic massive sulphide district in Albania, Tirex Resources debuted on the Venture board in mid-October at $1.05. In less than two months, the company has shot up to $3.32, a gain of $2.27, or 216%.
Despite closing a $50-million equity financing priced at $2.90 per share, Silverstone Resources fell 50 over the session to close at $2.50. Silverstone holds 90% of four silver-gold exploration projects in west-central Mexico and has long-term silver stream agreements with three mines in Portugal and Mexico.
