TSX Venture Exchange – August 4-10

Though the S&P/TSX Venture composite index gained during the Aug. 4-10 reporting period, it was only by 5.64 points. By and large, the gain was achieved off a blistering trading volume of 117 million shares on Aug. 4 — the highest in three months — that pushed the Venture board up by 16.41 points. After that, it was mostly small daily losses. The index closed the five-day period out at 1,185.21 points.

Overall, average daily trading volume was strong at 88.6 million shares and more companies continued to reach 52-week highs than lows by a score of 47-24.

Troymet Exploration grabbed a lot of attention, jumping 6.5¢ to 8.5¢, without releasing any news. What’s more, it did so on high-octane trading volumes that put it near the top of the activity board during the five-day period. Single-day volume of about 14 million for a company that typically trades with volumes in the 20,000-to 200,000-range was enough to warrant notice of the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada, which requested of Troymet an explanation for the spike. Troymet, which owns the Golden Eagle project in B. C., could not say why it occurred. The company is planning field operations at Golden Eagle later this year.

Gleichen Resources rocketed 27¢ to 82¢ on news that Teck had agreed to its US$150-million bid for a 78.8% stake of the Morelos gold project in Mexico. The company, headed up by Michael Murphy, said it would raise necessary funds on a best-efforts basis and that it had hired a talented slate of employees to develop the project. Gleichen also announced that FNX Mining’s Terry MacGibbon would join its board of directors when the proposed financing is in place. Teck has been looking for additional sources of revenue as it aggressively seeks to retire debt.

Amador Gold jumped 150% or 6¢ to 10¢ on news of grab samples that delivered high-grade gold values. Grab samples from Amador’s Horwood property, about 85 km southwest of Timmins, Ont., assayed as high as 75 grams gold per tonne. The samples came from a shear-hosted vein showing massive sulphides. Canada Lithium was also hot as its share price almost doubled, up 25¢ to 61¢.

Others posting significant gains were: Goldsource Mines, up 35¢ to $1.58; Apoquindo Minerals, up 26¢ to 81¢; and Goldbrook Ventures, up 12¢ to 21¢. Goldbrook was propelled by news that it and Chinese state-controlled Jilin Jien Nickel Industry Co. were making an all-cash offer for TSXlisted Canadian Royalties.

During the Aug. 4-10 trading period, Amazon Mining backed off a closing high of 81¢ by 26¢ to 55¢. In the last couple of months, it had been trading in the twenties but the potential of its Cerrado Verde potash project has since fuelled market interest. The company hopes the project, in Brazil’s Minas Gerais state, will one day provide that country with a fertilizer product.
