Toronto Stock Exchange – OCTOBER 13-19

The TSX Composite Index held steady over the Oct. 13-19 trading period, gaining 101.47 points to finish at 11,538.390.

The Capped Metals and Mining Index rose a notable 2.5%, or 23.46 points, rising to 958.03 points.

And as gold reached another record high this week, touching US$1,070 per oz., and the Canadian dollar rose toward parity with the U. S. dollar, the Global Gold Index slipped 2.71 points to close at 344.68 points.

The gold producers were on the losing side over the period, including Barrick Gold, down $1.14 per share to $$40.11. Barrick is cutting 80 jobs from its Toronto office to save US$50 million (pretax) per year. The company will take a US$30 million charge between the third and fourth quarters as a result.

Seabridge Gold shares fell $2.03 to $24.77. The company announced that an agreement to sell its Red Mountain project in British Columbia to Bon Terra Resources for $12 million has fallen through. Seabridge is now looking for another buyer.

Agnico-Eagle Mines shares fell $1.54 during the period to $73.45. Agnico-Eagle CFO, David Garofalo told Reuters that he expects the gold price will reach US$2,300 per oz., though he didn’t give a timeline.

The most actively traded stock was Eastern Platinum, a Canadian company that produces platinum in South Africa’s Bushveld igneous complex, with 55.3 million shares traded. Shares rose 20% to 81¢ on no news.

The largest value change in share price went to Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan, up $12.50 to $106.84 per share. Next in line was another fertilizer heavyweight, Agrium, up $4.07 to close at $58.90 per share.

Takeover speculation has been abuzz for a while now, with many wondering whether giants like BHP Billiton or Vale will be making deals anytime soon.

A Bank of America Merrill Lynch report suggested that BHP could afford to take over of Potash Corp., with a 30% premium.

Agrium, is selling part of its Carseland nitrogen facility east of Calgary to Terra Industries, which is considered part of its strategy to buy rival CF Industries Holdings.

Anticipation that it would soon be able to reopen its Jerritt Caynon gold mine in Nevada gave Yukon-Nevada Gold almost doubled shares to 35¢.

The company signed a consent decree with the state environmental regulators and had to pay US$550,000 in fines for issues related to the mine’s mercury emissions. The mill was ordered closed on May 30.

Far West Mining was another top gainer. Shares jumped 56.4% to $3.05 per share. The company announced a financing for $10 million at 2.04 per share with Quadra Mining. Quadra will be given anti-dilution rights to maintain its interest in Free West — the deal gives Quadra a 7.9% interest which could rise to 14.64% if all warrants are exercised.
