The TSX lost ground during the June 24-26 trading session, with the S&P TSX Composite Index falling 117 points, or 0.8%, to 14,292, in sympathy with a drop on Wall Street. Mining and materials stocks were more resilient: the Capped Metals and Mining Index lost one point to 837, while the Capped Materials Index rose 6 points, or 1.5%, to 406.
Shareholders in U308 Corp. voted 68% in favour of the junior uranium exploration company’s current board after Aberdeen International, which holds 10% of the company, tried to replace it with its own slate of directors. U3O8 closed the session at 80, down 6, while Aberdeen rose 2 to 66.
Detour Gold added 41 to $22.21. The company recently reported wide gold intersections at its Detour Lake project, in northern Ontario.
CIC Energy rose $1.87 to $7.60. The company is planning to build the Mmamabula coal-based complex in Botswana, which was envisaged to include a power station, export coal facilities, and a coal-to-oil conversion plant. On June 23, the company announced that the first phase of the project could not proceed, because CIC has been unable to reach an agreement with an engineering contractor. It is now looking at alternative configurations for the first phase, including building a smaller power station. The company hopes to supply power to the Southern African grid, where more electricity is needed.
Homeland Energy lost 21 to $1.61. The company owns coal assets in South Africa and is negotiating to purchase a coal company in the Appalachian region in the U. S. In addition to its coal interests, the company owns a stake in Homeland Uranium.
Gold Eagle Mines rose $1.31 to $9.21 after Agnico-Eagle Mines invested about $50 million in the company through a prvate placement. Gold Eagle owns the Bruce Channel discovery, on Ontario’s Red Lake trend.
Premier Gold Mines rose 18 to $2.60 during the session on results from its Geraldton gold project, in Ontario.
Northland Resources fell 50 to $2.88. Northland has three iron ore projects in Scandinavia, and has revised its preliminary economic assessments for the projects.
Revett Minerals fell 4 to 56. The company is starting prefeasibility work on its Rock Creek copper-silver project in Montana.
Energy Fuels dropped 9 to 91. In May, the company announced the purchase of a uranium project in Utah.
Pinetree Capital lost 13 to $2.25. The company owns stakes in a number of mining and exploration companies. On June 20, the company announced a $40-million private placement.
Western Canadian Coal dropped $1.49 to $9.31 after enjoying a huge bull run that started last year. The company is conducting a strategic review that could result in a sale.
