THE DIAMOND PAGE — SouthernEra tests Sugarbird fissure

Test-pitting by SouthernEra Resources (SUF-T) is assessing the diamond potential of the Sugarbird Northern fissure, part of the company’s Klipspringer property in South Africa.

Seven test-pits, each about 1 metre deep, were excavated at regular intervals from the recently discovered enlargement, or blow, on the Sugarbird fissure. The pits yielded a total sample weight of 2.8 tonnes of dominantly weathered kimberlite.

Twelve diamonds weighing a total of 5.99 carats were recovered, with the largest stone being a 1.66-carat gem. The average weight of the recovered diamonds is 0.5 carat.

SouthernEra is building a road to the site in order to extract a 100-tonne bulk sample. The company notes that the Sugarbird fissure has been traced for a 2.3-km distance and is open in both directions. Diamonds have been found in small soil samples taken along most of the fissure’s known length.

Core drilling will soon begin in an attempt to delineate the structure. A larger drill will be used to obtain the bulk sample.
