The 1987 Coal Review LUSCAR

With a history of more than 75 years of continuous operations, Luscar Ltd. is one of western Canada’s best-established and most diversified coal companies. It operates five modern surface mines to produce a range of products, including bituminous metallurgical and thermal coal, sub-bituminous coal, lignite and lignite char. In addition, Luscar Ltd. is a major shareholder in Neptune Bulk Terminals (Canada) and is actively engaged in the acquisition, exploration and development of oil and gas properties. The company’s mining operations include: * Coal Valley mine — Located in Coal Valley, Alta., this joint venture between Luscar (75%) and Alberta Energy Co. (25%) produces bituminous thermal coal. It is operated by Luscar Sterco (1977) and has an annual capacity of three million tonnes.

* Luscar mine — A 50/50 joint venture between Luscar and Consolidation Coal Co. of Canada, this mine produces bituminous metallurgical coal. It is located in Luscar, Alta., and has an annual capacity of three million tonnes. Cardinal River Coals is the operator.

* Paintearth mine — Sub-bitumin ous coal is produced at this Forestburg, Alta., mine. Operated by Forestburg Collieries (1984), its annual capacity is two million tonnes.

* Boundary Dam mine — Located in Estevan, Sask., this operation produces lignite coal at an annual capacity of two million tonnes. Manitoba and Saskatchewan Coal (1984) is the operator.

* Bienfait mine — The annual capacity at this mine, in Bienfait, Sask., is 1.5 million tonnes of lignite coal and 100,000 tonnes of lignite char. The operator is Bienfait Coal Co.

Luscar is developing plans for expansion of its operations in Saskatchewan and has the approval of the Energy Resources Conservation Board to develop mines near Hanna and Tofield, Alta.
