Sudbury wins environment award (May 25, 1992)

The municipality of Sudbury, Ont., is recognized for its efforts in reversing some of the environmental damage caused by more than a century of nickel mining, logging and natural erosion.

Along with 25 individuals and five organizations, Sudbury recently received a 1992 Chevron Conservation Award during a special ceremony in Washington, D.C.

The award consisted of a cheque for $1,000 and a bronze plaque. The municipality planted more than 1.2 million trees and re-generated more than 7,400 acres or more than 40% of the damaged land over a period of 13 years.

Now in its 38th year, the Chevron Conservation Awards Program is the oldest privately sponsored recognition program of its kind.
