Guest speaker at a “student’s night” dinner Jan. 21 at Toronto’s Royal York Hotel will be Michael Sopko, chairman and chief executive officer of Inco Ltd. The dinner is sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum’s Toronto Branch.
Sopko will address the nickel industry’s problems and possibilities. Pressured by an over-supply of nickel from Russia, Western producers are reducing output.
Hope is pinned on possible growth for nickel in Asian and the Pacific markets, as countries such as China and India strive to improve their standard of living.
A metallurgical engineer, Sopko earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from McGill University in the early 1960s.
