Australia-based Whittle Programming has developed two software packages to determine the most economical shape for an open pit.
The two packages. Three-D and Four-D, are also designed to help indicate the point at which operators should proceed to underground mining. Three-D uses block models to determine the best outline for a pit with a mine life of 2-3 years.
Four-D is said to do the same for a pit with a longer life. It produces 40-50 designs and allows the user to examine these under a range of economic conditions.
