Sherritt plant near capacity

Nickel processor Sherritt Gordon (TSE) recently reported that it expects its refinery at Fort Saskatchewan, Alta., will operate at better than 90% of capacity for the remainder of 1991.

In its first-quarter report, Sherritt said it produced 10.3 million lb. nickel and 482,000 lb. cobalt (as a byproduct) during the 3-month period.

Compared with last year, the nickel output is down while the cobalt output is higher. The company attributed the lower nickel production mainly to delays in the delivery of nickel feed from one of its suppliers.

Refinery capacity is 55 million lb. per year.
