SGS Open House, Manitoba convention draw delegates

More than 300 representatives of industry, government and universities attended the 25th anniversary Open House of the Saskatchewan Geological Society (SGS) in Saskatoon.

In Winnipeg, the 1994 Manitoba Mining, Minerals and Petroleum Convention attracted more than 500 delegates.

In Saskatoon, delegates were given a firsthand look at the results of geoscientific research, which acts as a stimulus to mineral exploration, conducted within the province during the past year. About $35 million was spent on mineral exploration in Saskatchewan during the year. Throughout the year, SGS carried out research in the area of tools to aid industry in the exploration for diamonds and pointed out the potential of finding base metal deposits (similar to those being mined in Africa) in the northern part of the province.

The Open House was expanded to two days. For the first time, industry representatives were given time to speak on current gold and diamond exploration projects. Premier Roy Romanow addressed one of the luncheons and the province’s minister of energy and mines, Douglas Anguish, opened the sessions.

The Winnipeg convention included reports, poster displays and talks on some of the exploration programs being carried out in Manitoba.

Examples of such activity include the Photo Lake deposit discovery of Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting in the Flin Flon-Snow Lake area, the Fer property of Canmine Resources, the Pipestone Lake titanium-vanadium deposit at Cross Lake of Gossan Resources and Cross Lake Explorations, the Pipe Deep deposit of Inco in Thompson, the William Lake deposit of Falconbridge, the Snow Lake area gold project of TVX Gold and the Bissett area gold project of Rea Gold.
