The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) has launched a $5-million fund-raising campaign to develop a new earth sciences gallery. Intended to replace the ROM’s old geology and mineral galleries, closed 10 years ago, the 1,400-square-metre gallery will include one of the world’s top 10 collections of minerals and gems.
Plate tectonic theory, a key geologic concept, will be the central theme of the gallery. Volcanoes, earthquakes, glaciers and limestone caverns will be integrated into the display through audio-visual presentations and reconstructions.
With the help of a group of mining executives, who will spearhead the fund- raising campaign, the museum hopes to complete the gallery by the mid-1990s. ROM staff will be manning a booth at the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada Convention.
