An initial phase of surface drilling on the Big Bull area of the Tulsequah Chief project in northwestern British Columbia has returned massive sulphide intersections.
Redfern Resources (TSE) hopes to outline additional reserves at the former producer to add to reserves at Tulsequah Chief, about five miles to the north. The drilling tested the Big Bull over a strike length of about 1,600 ft., with stepouts of up to 300 ft. beyond previously mined ore. Former mining operations at the Big Bull deposit date back to the 1950s when Cominco was operator.
Five of the six recent holes intersected mineralization and the company is working on a second-phase, 6,500-ft. program to test the deposit farther along strike and to depth.
Underground drilling on Tulsequah Chief, now complete, has confirmed previous reserve estimates in the upper portions of the deposit. In addition, Redfern estimates the overall grade could increase by 5-10%. Minable reserves are estimated at 7.7 million tons grading 6.42% zinc, 1.4% copper, 1.07% lead, 0.07 oz. gold and 2.72 oz. silver per ton. The deposit remains open to depth. Surface drilling was also conducted on two intense alteration zones in the immediate vicinity of Tulsequah Chief. One target returned low metal values in four holes, but will be considered for further drilling along strike and to depth. Drilling on the other target, the 5200 alteration zone, encountered technical difficulties and failed to intersect the full thickness of the alteration zone.
The drilling difficulties were caused by thick river gravels and the company is reviewing various techniques in an effort to solve the problem. Results from the Big Bull drilling are as follows:
