Province stays Westray charges

A decision to stay 18 safety-related charges against the owner of the Westray coal mine in Nova Scotia and four managers was announced recently by the province’s chief prosecutor.

A methane explosion at Westray in May, 1992, left 26 miners dead. The charges were laid against Curragh (TSE) and the managers under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The RCMP is investigating the fatal explosion, and the province feared a trial might interfere with any possible criminal charges resulting from the RCMP probe.
