Pouliot appointed Ontario’s acting mines minister

Ontario Premier Bob Rae has appointed Gilles Pouliot as acting minister of northern development and mines.

He replaces Shelley Martel, the Sudbury East representative who recently resigned from cabinet (T.N.M., Oct. 17/94).

Pouliot, who hails from northwestern Ontario, will continue as minister of transportation.

First elected in 1985, he served as minister of mines following the NDP victory at the polls in 1990. Martel assumed his mines portfolio in 1991 when Pouliot was moved to transportation.

Active in municipal politics prior to winning a seat in the provincial legislature, Pouliot worked in the mill at Noranda’s Geco mine at Manitouwadge.
